Vickerman and Kepu return to the fold

Wallaby forwards Dan Vickerman and Sekope Kepu have become the latest additions to the Waratahs' pre-season training squad, after the pair rejoined teammates to continue their rehabilitation.

Their return is further good news for NSW fans and comes a week after fellow Wallaby heavyweights Benn Robinson and Wycliff Palu rejoined the ranks.

The 63-cap lock Vickerman has been in a sling up until now following reconstruction of his left shoulder five weeks ago, whilst prop Kepu sustained an injury to his left eye after being accidently poked by a team mate during last month's World Cup semifinal.

Although he is pleased to be back in action, Vickerman made the most of an enforced rest period.

"It was good to have a break to be honest," the veteran lock said.

With the typical recovery time from such an operation around six months, a return to action is unlikely before April but with his post-operative rest period now complete, the 32-year-old is eager to get back into training.

"Having the arm out of the sling is a relief, I've not been able to do much up so far but now I'll start regular physio and get back in the gym for some lower body conditioning."

For Kepu, the road to recovery is not so clear.

"Certainly it's been frustrating," admitted the prop, who took some time off after returning from New Zealand.

" Things are improving gradually but my vision is still impaired."

On the advice of opthalmologists, Kepu will continue to make a gradual return to training with any reaction carefully monitored.

"It's a bit of a unique situation.  I've starting running this week and all I can do is wait and see how the eye reacts over the next few weeks and take it from there."
