The All Blacks opened the World Cup with a 41-10 win, but were not at their clinical best in every department, with the performance of Kahui one of the positives.
"Getting the ball with much space you should make a fair go of it so I will have to get around and shake a few hands and thank the boys inside for doing a great job," said Kahui, who scored two tries in the win.
Waikato man Kahui gave Tonga credit for not allowing the match to turn into an All Blacks onslaught, with the raging cup favourites scoring only six tries.
"They ran hard, and tackled hard. They brought everything we expected and certainly in that second half they showed they were a quality side," he said.
Kahui also admitted he felt warmed by the reception for the side as they left their hotel for the stadium, with more than 1000 passionate fans there to cheer them on.
"I think there's real pride and we can all be proud to be Kiwis. Everyone seemed to be really proud to be All Blacks fans so it was really nice," added.
