McCaw: Played through pain at World Cup

McCaw played through the pain to help the All Blacks to glory on home soil knowing that it would almost certainly mean him missing the start of Canterbury's Super Rugby season.

The 30-year-old had surgery on Thursday to remove a screw that had been inserted in his right foot earlier in the year.

McCaw will need 10-12 weeks before he can start running putting a serious question mark on his availability for the Crusaders' opening match of the season against Auckland on 24 February.

All Blacks doctor Deb Robinson said: "Richie's surgery went very well - the screw was removed and he also received a bone graft.

"In addition he had an X-ray prior to surgery which showed the bone had started to heal to some extent in the four weeks since the end of the World Cup, which is good news."
