Paterson: Ready for Romania

Although Paterson is not underestimating Romania, the veteran hopes Scotland's meticulous build-up pays off.

The 33-year-old, who will become the first Scot to appear in four World Cups, said: "It seems a long time since we met on June 4 to start the preparations and the first game was what we were targeting.

"Now we're here, we feel well prepared. We're just desperate to get out and put it into action.

"We have to deliver now - it's as simple as that."

Paterson featured in Scotland's 42-0 win over Romania four years ago and knows what to expect.

"Romania are a physical side, a good side. We played them in 2007 and won reasonably well, but that was at home, that was at Murrayfield," he added.

"I've played against Romania away from home on a couple of occasions and they're a tough side with top players.

"Everybody targets the first game. It will be a huge challenge but we're looking to perform well and hopefully win."

Four years ago, Paterson's immaculate kicking display throughout the tournament was marked daily by French newspaper L'Equipe.

Paterson produced a faultless kicking display in France four years ago, and he will bid to add to his record haul of 786 points.

But he was not thinking about his prolific record with the boot as he prepared to depart for kicking practice.

He added: "Judging by the wind in the hotel room last night it's going to be a bit tricky.

"It's a duty I'm given when I play and I'll do it as best I can. The practice is important."
