Hodge blames weather for misses

Chris Paterson: Had 100% record in 2007

Four years ago Scotland full-back Chris Paterson recorded 100 per cent accuracy during the World Cup.

However both he and fly-half Dan Parks are among a number of players who has struggled with his kicking during the tournament - and while the ball has been criticised in some quarters, Hodge believes the elements have been a bigger factor.

Hodge said: "There doesn't seem to be massive differences with the ball - it does seem slightly different to the one we used in the Six Nations, but I think the wind and the stadium we were playing in definitely have a part to play as well.

"Back at home all international games are in enclosed stadia whereas over here there are a lot of open stadiums - it's probably a slight combination of both."

Despite the issues with kicking, Hodge knows that it is imperative whoever is given the kicking duties has a high success rate in Sunday's crucial Pool B clash with Argentina.

Scotland can guarantee their place in the last eight with victory over the Pumas.

And Hodge said: "Goalkicking's important in any game and it's going to be important at the weekend.

"The stadium we're playing in on Sunday is a low stadium so wind will definitely have an effect."
