Previously the job has been held by scrum-halves Chris Cusiter, Mike Blair, Rory Lawson and second row Alastair Kellock, who was captain at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
With none of the four guaranteed their place in the side, Robinson is poised to turn to a first-choice pick as his skipper for the forthcoming RBS 6 Nations Championship and beyond.
The Scotland head coach said: "I will be looking at selecting a captain. It's important to be able to grow that person as a leader.
"If I select a captain, I've got to pick him. I fully realise that and it's something I'll be focusing on going through the next four years.
"The decision will be made around a player that is going to be playing in the team and playing well in the team."
Kellock was omitted from the team against Argentina before returning against England in matches Scotland lost to exit the World Cup.
Robinson stood by the tactical decision and his admission that a first-choice pick is set to be captain is set to spark debate, with John Barclay, Kelly Brown and Ross Ford among the names sure to be in contention.
Robinson is also set to explore adding to his coaching group.
While sticking with his backroom team from New Zealand - including Gregor Townsend, who was criticised for Scotland's poor try-scoring record - Robinson is eager to add experience, with the role to be defined once an appointment is made.
He said: "We want to bring somebody in with international coaching experience, just to make sure we don't stand still.
"There are a number of people I've identified and it's about focusing on who would be best in order to move Scotland forward."
Moving forward is key for Robinson, who is set to integrate up-and-coming talent into the Test squad, as he bids to improve his record of two wins in 10 Six Nations matches when the tournament begins against England on February 4.
Asked if he has a minimum expectation for Scotland in the Six Nations, Robinson said: "I do and it's better than that, because that's not acceptable.
"It's important that we get off to a very good start in the England and Wales games, that we're able to win those games.
"That's one of the key focuses for me."
