De Villiers: Will reapply to stay with the Springboks

De Villiers appeared to have stepped down after the World Cup quarter-final defeat to Australia by claiming he had 'come to the end of the road'.

However de Villiers claims his comments were misinterpreted, with the 54-year-old insisting he was referring to the fact that his current deal was due to expire.

And de Villiers has now underlined his desire to extend his stay in charge beyond the end of his contract in December.

"Not winning the World Cup makes me feel like there is unfinished business, that the story isn't finished," he told Supersport. "So if they call for applications for the Springbok job I will definitely apply for it. Why not? I have enjoyed doing the job and it was a privilege for me to serve my country.

"If I apply and my application is not accepted that is fine, I will accept what is good for South African rugby and move on. The next coach will have my full support."
