MacDonald Man of Match vs. Russia at RWC

Former Golden Bear Mike MacDonald '04 was named Man of the Match following the United States' 13-6 win Thursday over Russia at the Rugby World Cup.

MacDonald, making a record-tying 10th RWC appearance for the U.S. National Team, received the honor for his performance as the Eagles improved to 1-1 in the third-most-viewed sporting event in the world with matches against Australia and Italy remaining for the Americans in pool play.

The 20-nation tournament began for the U.S. on Sept. 11 with a 22-6 loss to Ireland. The top-two teams from all four pools will advance to the quarterfinals.

Also playing Thursday against Russia for the Eagles were former Cal players Chris Biller at hooker and flanker Louis Stanfill as starters, with Blaine Scully joining them at wing just before halftime. Eric Fry, Colin Hawley and Brian McClenahan bring the total blue-and-gold presence on the U.S. National Team to almost 25 percent of its roster, with former Cal player and coach Matt Sherman as an assiatant coach.

The U.S. National Team faces Australia on Friday, Sept. 23, with live TV coverage on Universal Sports beginning at 1:15 a.m. PT.

The Eagles could enter their final pool-play fixture against Italy - a match played in New Zealand on Sept. 27 but with a time difference making the live broadcast Monday, Sept. 26, on Universal Sports an 11:15 p.m. PT start - with a chance to advance the knockout round.
