The Finals are set in the Emirates Airline USA Rugby Boy’s High School and High School Club National Championship Invitational following a soggy day of exciting playoff action. Some out of the ordinary teams will feature in the Championships, along with local powerhouse United.
In the single school competition, Penn (IN) and Dixon (CA) will meet in Rio Tinto Stadium tomorrow for the High School hardware.
Dixon has looked strong coming into this tournament, having just completed a successful season in the hugely competitive Northern California competition. Dixon had to fight their way through two tough games to advance to the final. High School All-American 7’s player Anthony Salaber led the team with 15 points in a 20-10 win over Snow Canyon from Utah.
The next game for Dixon would prove to be a real test as they faced perennial contenders Xavier in the Semi Final. Salaber again would be the horse for Dixon scoring two tries and 15 more points, leading to the 20-12 victory.
Penn High School out of Indiana had scrap tooth and nail to advance to day two. The day for Penn started in a downpour against Charlotte Catholic. The conditions were tough for both teams, making points hard to come by. Penn would get on the board early though with two tries through their pairing in the Centers, Emerson Marenyi and Alexander Dorrier.
The next game wouldn’t be any easier for Penn as they squared off against another perennial contender in Gonzaga. This would be a defensive battle throughout, and the only try for Penn came from powerful #8 Dylan Heyvaert. The entire second half would be back and forth, but no more points were put on the board and the game would end in an 8-8 draw to go to penalty kicks. Penn would take the penalty kick contest, and advance to the championship.
In the High School Club completion (multiple school teams), local stalwart United will have their hands full when they face an impressive Cathedral team out of Indiana for the Championship.
Cathedral had little trouble putting points on the board in the wet conditions. They came out of the blocks quickly with a 41-3 lambasting of Union County. Flyhalf Greg Wood was a points scoring machine totaling 17 off three tries and a conversion.
Cathedral’s second match looked much more ominous however, having to face the CO State Champion Colorado Springs team that had earlier knocked off TRYBE, and was considered a favorite in this tournament. Cathedral would again prove their dominance however, pounding C. Springs 36-6. Wood again led the team in tries with a pair.
Local favorites United had a hard time with the wet conditions as well this morning beating the Marin Highlanders 10-5. High School All-American 7s player Zach Webber scored the only try for United.
Webber would find the try zone again in United’s second match, where they faced a strong Kansas City Jr. Blues outfit. Caleb Concannon put two tries on the board for KC, but United would outlast the Jr. Blues 19-13 to advance to the final.
Tomorrow’s Championship Matches will be held in Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, UT. Tickets for the event can be purchase HERE. Fans will get 5 games for the price of one, including the D1-A championship match between BYU and Arkansas St.
