USA WNT Names Lineup for Test against Canada
2009-06-26 23:00:56

The USA Women’s National Rugby Team has officially announced its lineup for its test match against the Canadian Women’s National Team, set to kick off on Saturday, June 27 at 6 p.m. at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colo.

The U.S. Women’s National Team has been training for the past week at the rugby complex in Glendale, Colo., maintaining an intense schedule including two-a-days, video sessions, mental skills sessions, conditioning and recovery work.

"Having a week of training before a match is unprecedented for our squad,” Women’s Head Coach Kathy Flores said. “We've been able to take the time necessary to build the foundations of our offensive and defensive principles, which we will continue to construct in this pre-World cup environment.”

The U.S. heads into this match eager to redeem itself since its last showing in which the U.S. Women were held scoreless by their northern rivals, losing to Canada, 15-0. In fact, the U.S. hasn’t won a match against Canada since 2006, and in the past 10 matches, hold a 4-6 record against the Canadians.

“Our past experience with Canada has shown they are particularly strong attackers in the open field and hard defenders at the set piece,” Flores said. “This week we've worked hard to contest in both of those areas so we look forward to a much stronger performance than we had at Nations Cup last August.

“This match is very important to us,” Flores added “We have yet to fully compete against Canada and we can wait no longer to prove we will be competitive in the next World Cup.

The Can-Am matches in Colorado are the first of five matches this summer, as the team kicks off its journey towards the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2010, which is held in England next August and September. The Women’s Eagles will see their remaining games in the Nations Cup in Toronto in August.

Tickets are just $15 for the match, or for groups buying 10 tickets, the 11 will be free!  Children under 12 get in free, as well.
