The Premiership club confirmed Lawson required an operation to repair damage suffered during the recent league game against leaders Harlequins at Kingsholm.
Lawson, 30, was forced off during the first-half of that game when he twisted awkwardly as he was cleared out of a ruck.
He is now expected to be sidelined for up to 12 weeks.
Lawson was assessed by Gloucester's medical team and sent for further scans with a specialist. He had surgery on Wednesday.
