Simpson was injured in March and surgery meant he missed the final six games of the season, forced into a frustrated bystander role as Wasps faced a tough end to their Aviva Premiership campaign.
Such is the battle for the number 9 shirt at Wasps, with Nic Berry and Charlie Davies making the pool in that position extremely competitive, that Simpson knows there are no certainties in team selection this weekend but is hopeful for a return to action.
"I can't wait to get started and get out there playing if selected," he said.
"Things are very promising at Wasps at the moment and we've brought in some high quality signings who are only going to help us improve.
"I would be the first to say that Nic Berry was one of the stand-out players at the club last year so I know what a battle I have on my hands.
"That spurs me on to improve because there are aspects to his game I can hugely learn from and we get on very well. With him and Charlie Davies, who is a different more abrasive type of nine, there is a really tough pool here so you can't take anything for granted."
Simpson says that one huge positive from the tough season just passed is the development of a group of young players who bring experience that belies their age into the year ahead.
"Those guys learned an awful lot last year and though I consider myself a youngster still myself, we now have some hugely talented 20 and 21-year olds who will count themselves unlucky if they aren't in the squad this weekend," aid Simpson. "With the talent we have that's a decent place to be."
Simpson adds that he is also hoping for a much improved season for himself personally this year too.
"Our goal as a squad is to improve in every aspect of our game which should then take care of improving our league position," he said.
"Personally last year I was hoping to push on and though I got my England cap which was great, I didn't quite have the season I would have liked.
"This season I feel I have more chance to play a faster game with the fire-power we have added and that is exciting for me."
