    The European Rugby Cup (ERC), the body which is responsible for the running of the Heineken Cup and the Amlin Challenge Cup, has appointed referees to the semifinals of each of those competitions.

    Law 22 Clarification

    The International Rugby Board has a subcommittee of the Rugby Committee, named the Designated members. They are the watchdogs of the laws of the game and national bodies from time to time ask them questions, to which they give clarifications/rulings which have the force of law. This one is from the French Federation and is about grounding in in-goal (law 22). The clarification is dated 10 April 2012.

    Boy knocks ref out

    The 20th Mauritz Hansen Rugby Week, in which 90 teams take part in five categories, was spoilt this year by the action of one player - a member of the Hans Strijdom school team from Mookgophong (Naboomspruit) in Limpopo. The schoolboy player, already guilty of foul play, assaulted the referee and knocked him unconscious.

    Refs for June Tests

    The IRB's new selection committee of Lyndon Bray, Tappe Henning, Donal Courtney and Brian Campsall with Paddy O'Brien as the manager and John Jeffrey as the chairman from the IRB's council has made the appointments of referees to international matches in June. Amongst them is Jaco Peyper, newly chosen to the IRB's top panel which has been reduced from 10 to eight.

    IRB changes refs' structure

    The International Rugby Board has had a fundamental shake-up of its refereeing structure. Most significantly its manager of referees, Paddy O'Brien, is to move from his present post to run Sevens referees, a job the IRB says is significant with Olympic participation in the offing.

    Refs for ERC quarters

    European Rugby Cup, the organisers of the Heineken Cup and the Amlin Challenge Cup have announced the referees for the quarterfinals. The appointments of referees and their assistants are made by the ERC Match Officials Sub Committee in conjunction with the referee managers in each Union. Form in the competition is taken into account.

    Ref changes in Week 5

    Bryce Lawrence has a hamstring problem and has withdrawn from active duty in Friday's match between the Blues and the Hurricanes. In fact he pulled out of the match between the Hurricanes and the Highlanders last weekend and was replaced by Keith Brown, one of his assistants.

    Byrnes appeal approved

    SANZAR Appeal Committee chaired by Nicholas Davidson has allowed an appeal by Adam Byrnes against the finding that he breached Law 10.4(m) by making contact with the eye area of another player, in circumstances constitutes dangerous play.
