Canada's U20 women's team defeated South Africa's U20's on Saturday, on the final day of competition at the 2011 Nations Cup, in Santa Barbara.
Having dropped a disappointing match versus the United States on Day #3, the Canadians came out of the gates flying, with three tries in the opening half from Juhee Thompson, Miranda Siefert and Manitoba's Meagan Vestby.
The second-half would mirror the pace of the first, as Canada kept the intensity level high. Scores from Cass Orr, Gillian Pegg and Ashley Delaney rounded out a great performance; leading Canada to a 32 - 5 result.
With that victory, the Canadians claimed 3rd place in the 2011 U20 Nations Cup, a finished with a record of 2 - 2.
Assistant Coach Beth Barz had these words, following the contest:
"The attacking platform today was started by an entire group effort on defence. Efficient and specific execution in attack also made the game flow and made it easier for us to control the pace of the game. All players put their best effort forward today."
What is also worth noting is that Canada utilized its entire tour roster over the course of this tournament, with the vast majority of these extremely young players having played multiple matches against international opposition.
In the coming days, we will be presenting a wrap-up discussion with the Canadian coaching staff, to chart the future of the Canadian U20 program, and discuss the events of this summer's California tour.
Later, on the final day of Nations Cup action, the powerful tournament favourites from England claimed the Nations Cup title by defeating the Americans, by a score of 48 - 11.
Final Score: Canada (32) - South Africa (5)
Canadian Tries: Thompson, Vestby, Siefert, Orr, Pegg, Delaney
Canadian Conversions: Vestby (2)
