Rugby, hakas and the New Zealand way

Twelve members of the squad travelled down the road from Waitangi to Bay of Islands College in Kawakawa to interact with local students on Tuesday.

The highlight of the day, by far, was when the students led the players to their Te Toka Whakakotahi marae to teach them how to perform a type of haka (not the one the All Blacks perform).

The team performed a haka, before witnessing the students perform their own. The school also wrote a haka for the Canadian team called Tima Rau Whero, or The Red Leaf.

Canada centre Ryan Smith was awe struck by the students’ haka.

“It was a pretty impressive site,” Smith said. “It’s pretty amazing the effort and impressionability they put into it. It’s a group of 13 and 14 year olds and they still struck a bit of fear into the boys. It’s amazing watching the energy and drawing the positive energy out of it.”
