A slow start didn’t stop the BYU Cougars from beating the University of Arizona Wildcats by the score of 80-8 tonight.
After being up just 5-3 after the 25th minute BYU wing Jordan Lowry would start the Cougars’ scoring barrage of 11 more tries that would go unanswered until the 80th minute when the Wildcats scored in the waning minutes.
Lowry’s try came from a gathered kick and counter-attack run from freshman fullback Tua Laei.
Lowry would hit a middle gap off the hip of Laei and would race 40 meters beating two Wildcat defenders on his way to the endzone.
Prior to Lowry’s try the Cougars went scoreless for over 20 minutes as knock-ons and penalties left the BYU attack limp.
The match’s opening points were scored by Arizona in 2nd minute after a BYU offsides penalty just inside their own 22 meter line gave the Wildcats the easy penalty goal.
After a successfully stolen restart kick the BYU Cougars immediately found themselves pressuring deep inside Arizona territory.
A BYU scrum saw Cougar captain Ryan Roundy pick the ball from the base and score for BYU’s opening try in the 5th minute.
But just as quickly as the BYU score came the continuity and execution that helped lead to Roundy’s score went missing for the next quarter of the game.
After numerous errors and mounted frustration Lowry’s try opened the flood-gates and no sooner did BYU start running away from the Wildcats on the back of four other tries by flyhalf Dylan Lubbe, center Paul Lasike, Laei and scrumhalf Shaun Davies.
Lasike would go on to tally a hat-trick and was backed up by his captain Roundy who dotted down twice as well.
Seven other Cougars would score on the evening and push the lead out to 80-3 in the 78th minute. But it wasn’t until the final moments of the game that Arizona would get past the BYU defense for an unconverted try.
BYU head coach David Smyth is glad his team was able to right the ship after a slow start in the first half.
“As poor as portions of that first half were,” said BYU head coach David Smyth, “There were some very good portions throughout the rest of the game. The good news is the guys found a way to get out of the funk they were in. It might have taken them a while, but they eventually got things back on track.”
With the win the Cougars move to 11-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference.
BYU now looks forward to what will arguably be the biggest game of the Cougars’ regular season as they host rival the University of Utah in the coveted Wasatch Cup match next Saturday on South Field in Provo.
Utah is coming off their own victory over the University of Arizona in Tucson last week by the score of 68-15.
Utah hosts Arizona State tomorrow in Salt Lake City before turning their own sights South to BYU and the Wasatch Cup.
Kick-off for the Wasatch Cup is set for 1pm next Saturday, April 7th. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students and kids 12 and under are free.
