Dartmouth Rugby will have a new head coach this fall season to fill in for Alex Magleby ’00 as he continues to serve as head coach of the USA Rugby 7’s team.
Magleby will continue to be involved with the program as sabbatical Head Coach. When his USA Rugby duties allow, Coach Mags will be available for consultation with the staff, College, and the Board to assist where needed.
Dartmouth has hired Gavin Hickie as Interim Head Coach for at least the Fall 2012 Ivy season. He is the forwards coach for the USA Rugby Junior All-Americans, recent winners of the iRB Junior World Trophy (under-20s). He also served as a coach for Belmont Shore Rugby Club, the D1 men’s club champions this past year. He has previously coached Leicester Tigers Academy, and other 7s and u20 XVs teams, and also has his own coaching consultancy company, LineoutCoach.com.
Coach Hickie played professional rugby for Leinster, London Irish, Worcester Warriors, and Leicester Tigers. He was a hooker in 15s, and served as captain for the Ireland 7s team. As a player, he was part of club teams that won the Six Nations, Celtic League, Guinness Premiership, and Anglo Welsh Cup. For his country, he played for Ireland Schools, Ireland U19, U21, Ireland “A” as well as Ireland 7’s. He was educated at St Mary’s College and University College Dublin.
Assisting Coach Hickie this year will be James Willocks, who comes to Dartmouth on an internship from the same coaching program at Otago University that provided Matt Long last year’s successful addition to the staff. James is currently working to finish his Graduate Diploma in Physical Conditioning from Otago Polytechnic and has extensive experience already as a conditioning coach. He also brings experience as a loose-forward, lock and 7’s player for the Premiers of the Alhambra-Union Rugby Club.
Ben Schuler, the ATC for the 2011 fall rugby season, will serve as the athletic trainer for the men's and women's teams for both the fall and spring seasons. Having coverage for spring trainings and matches is a big addition for the program, and the rugby program appreciates the College's help in this regard.
With the start of preseason this past week, preparations have already begun for the Fall 2012 Ivy season. The Big Green look forward to their first game of the season on September 1st, facing off against perennial power Queens University on the team’s upcoming tour of Canada, as well as running into traditional cross-border rivals, McGill University.
