Eight Golden Bears scored a total of 13 tries as California beat James Madison University, 77-0, for its eighth shutout of the spring season Wednesday night on Witter Rugby Field.
Sophomore match-day captain Michael Bush and freshman flyhalf Harry Adolphus both had hat tricks and freshman winger Charles Guiraud scored twice as the Bears started 14 first- and second-year players, who were joined by six more underclassmen as replacements.
"We wanted to maintain our effort through the final whistle and I think we did that," said Bush. "It was good to see us stay crisp even as we tired.
James Madison contested in the lineup and played a physical game. I'm happy with it."
The closest the Dukes (0-2) came to scoring occurred when JMU flyhalf Chris Kunkle was wide right on his 34-meter penalty attempt in the 24th minute. Remaining determined, James Madison held up two Bears ballcarriers in-goal and demonstrated 80 minutes of passion in the match, an effort acknowledged by their head coach, Mark Lambourne, who played for Ned Anderson and Jack Clark at Cal, becoming Clark's first captain in 1984.
"There's no better program in the country than Cal," Lambourne said. "We are aspiring to build a program on the East Coast. It's a young team and I was very proud of them."
Coach Clark said, "It's really great to have the opportunity to host James Madison. They're a class outfit and it was special to have Mark back on campus."
The Bears (15-0, 3-0 PAC) will next travel to their PAC Rugby Conference matchup at Oregon State (2-3, O-1 PAC) this Saturday, March 9, at 1 p.m., when Cal will play its fourth match in eight days.
After its trip to Corvallis, Ore., Cal goes back on the road to finish the "World Cup" series against the University of British Columbia in Vancouver March 24, when the Bears will try to win their seventh straight 'Cup ' before returning to Witter Rugby Field to celebrate Homecoming as they host Utah at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 30.
