Griffons lock Marnus Briedenhann is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot in the neck during a hijacking in Bloemfontein in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 23-year-old Briedenhann, who played against the Falcons in Kempton Park on Saturday in the provincial first division, was hijacked by two armed men in Westdene, Bloemfontein.

"They forced him to drive to Naval Hill... he tried to escape and that's when they shot him in the neck," said Police captain Chaka Marope.

A passer-by called an ambulance and Briedenhann was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition, meanwhile, the police's patrolling unit spotted his car at a filling station in Botshabelo and a shoot-out ensued. The hijackers ran away but the car was recovered.
