The European Cup competition is to follow Super Rugby's example and export itself... to the Southern Hemisphere.

It was confirmed on Friday that Saracens have applied for permission to stage their European Cup game against Biarritz in South Africa.

This follows the Super Rugby game between Super Rugby's beaten finalists the Crusaders and the Sharks of South  Africa that was staged in London earlier this year.

The ambitious Premiership champions, Saracens, confirmed they want to play their Round Five pool game, scheduled for the weekend of January 13, in Cape Town.

"Following media speculation this [Friday] morning, Saracens confirm it has applied to ERC, the RFU and SA Rugby for permission to play the European Cup Round Five match against Biarritz in Cape Town," a statement from Saracens said.

"The club will continue to engage with these bodies, and other important stakeholders such as sponsors and broadcasters, and is committed to acting in the best interests of European rugby.

"In addition, the club will consult widely and seriously with season-ticket holders and supporters before reaching any final decision," the statement concluded.

The Men in Black have built a squad which features a number of South Africans such as Schalk Brits - who played for the Cape Town-based Stormers on a loan basis in the Super Rugby semifinal - and Ernst Joubert.

Sarries have also signed Springbok captain John Smit who will move to England as soon as the World Cup is over.
