Kingswood beat Winterberg

The Kingswood 1st XV, minus five regulars, were good enough on the day to beat hosts Winterberg 10-3 in perfect rugby conditions and extend their winning run of seven matches on the trot. The match was characterised by solid defence from both sides and numerous handling errors.

The match started with Kingswood enjoying territorial advantage as they ran the ball from all areas of the field. This caused the Winterberg team to be forced offside and Laine Collett put Kingswood ahead with a neatly slotted penalty.

From the resulting kick-off Kingswood kept transgressing and numerous penalties being awarded to Winterberg with flyhalf Charl Rogers, who had a great overall game, slotting a long range penalty. The Kingswood forwards dominated the tight scrums, but fluffed many of their own line-outs which kept Winterberg in the game.

Kingswood started the second half like a house on fire as flyhalf Lihleli Xoli, who has been having an outstanding season on attack and defence, scoring an excellent individual try in the first minute, which Collett converted. Trailing 3-10, Winterberg made their intentions clear as their forwards carried the ball through many phases, but they couldn't penetrate the resilient Kingswood defence. Jonathan Braans was outstanding at the breakdown for Kingswood and created turnover ball which allowed flyhalf Xoli to drive Winterberg back with long raking kicks.

Kingswood spent most of the second half attacking the Winterberg line, but spoiled many try-scoring opportunities by being overeager and mistiming their passes. Xoli and Braans were outstanding for Kingswood and Kingswood no doubt will be motivated to end the season well in their final fixture against Graeme at "City Lords."
