Aliwal enjoy big surprise

Aliwal-Noord went the 160 km to Queenstown and beat hosts Hangklip 30-8, a surprisingly big victory.

There was not much in it at half-time as the visitors had conceded many penalties and led just 11-8. The home side could have been far ahead but missed five penalty kicks at goal, two of them from in front.

Inn the first half each side scored a try. The Hangklip try was a brilliant solo effort by their speedy fullback Gerrit Marais. Aliwal-Noord's try was scored by hooker Glen Pletzen with lots of help from the other forwards.

Hangklip did not score in the second half while Aliwal-Noord scored three more tries. Centre Caylen du Plessis got two similar tries - chasing a kick, catching a defender and stealing the ball to score. The last try was scored by big Marius Croucamp who burst away with a great turn of speed to beat the fullback and score.

It was a happy bus that made the journey home to Aliwal North.
