Confidence grows in Kuils River

De Kuilen of Kuils River, not far from Stellenbosch and Paarl is used to supplying players to the Paarl Schools and Paul Roos but suddenly its homegrown team is making its mark in Western Province schools rugby. They just lost to SACS and on Saturday beat Rondebosch a side in the FNB Top 20. It was the first time that they had ever played Rondebosch.

The 1st XV score was just 14-13, a try apiece but it was an occasion of much joy. They had run SACS close earlier in the season, losing just 20-19.

De Kuilen have not great depth but their juniors are promising. The Under-16, which beat SACS, lost 17-13 to the powerful Rondebosch side in the dying minutes of the game and the Under-15 won. But the Under-14A lost 57-7.

Rugby has grown in the school, its players honoured, its coaches enthusiastic.

Against Rondebosch De Kuilen were generally in control of the game and it was a try at the death that brought Rondebosch as close as the score suggests.
