Charlton Windvogel: Captain of Weltevrede

Weltevrede captain Charlton Windvogel was part of the team that beat Bergrivier for the first time in four years last year and he is aiming for a repeat performance in their FNB Classic Clash this weekend.

Windvogel has been leading the side for the last few weeks in the absence of the regular captain, who suffered a neck injury and has been sidelined for six weeks, and the physical inside centre is confident that his team can come out on top at the Boland Stadium on Saturday.

The Weltevrede captain was originally a fullback, but once he was selected for the first XV last year he was moved to the midfield due to his hard tackling and ability to break the line - qualities he shares with his role model Juan de Jongh who will be playing in the same position for the Springboks against the All Blacks on Saturday.

Windvogel was the obvious choice to take the captaincy reins when his skipper was struck down by injury as he calls the defensive system in the backline and he told classicclashes.co.za that communication is one of his strengths.

"The team defends on my terms - when I am on the field I only talk rugby, I am quite serious about it. I communicate well but I also like to lead by example and that is what I will be doing against Bergrivier."

The Weltevrede backline general is very confident that his side will be able to repeat their groundbreaking victory over Bergrivier that they recorded last year.

"I believe in my team, we are very motivated for this one and we are positive that we can beat them again.," he said.

Windvogel explained that his team's strength lies in their dominant forward pack. The tight five that played against Bergrivier last year are all still at the school and their game this weekend will centre around their pack.

"We want to win the game with the forwards, the backline will just keep things simple and finish off the hard work that our pack will do up front," he explained.
