Billy Liebenberg: Captain of Goudveld

Goudveld captain Billy Liebenberg is expecting a tight encounter when his side take on their local rivals Welkom Gimnasium in their FNB Classic Clash this weekend.

Liebenberg has played for the Goudveld first XV for three years, playing a different position in the backline each year, but he is most comfortable at fullback - the position which he will run out in against 'Gimmies'.

The free-running backline ace compares himself to elusive Wallaby fullback Kurtley Beale, as his counter-attacking ability and eye for a gap are his main strengths, but he has more than enough versatility having played at right wing and centre for the 'Gouties' first team as well.

Welkom Gimnasium managed to beat Goudveld last year, but Liebenberg explained that his side only really started playing in the second half in that game and he is determined to turn things around on Saturday in front of what should be an enthusiastic crowd.

He told classicclashes.co.za: "We started playing too late last year but this year we will play from the first whistle and hopefully give ourselves a better chance. The teams are evenly matched so it should be close."

Liebenberg revealed that his team's strength is their dangerous backline who will look to run the ball and give their speedy wings a chance to spread their legs against 'Gimmies', but he also praised his pack whose "hearts are in the right place".

"Our team, from No.1 to 15, all like to run the ball and that is what we will be looking to do this weekend. We have got plenty of confidence and we will be giving our all," he said.

Goudveld suffered a big blow last weekend when one of their strongest players, who plays on the flank, broke his ankle. But Liebenberg is confident that his replacement will be able to step up against 'Gimmies'.

"All 22 of us train together every week, so the guy coming will be comfortable and we know he has the ability to do the job as well," he added.
