Hooker Tiaan Liebenberg will become the third player to be handed the Western Province captaincy armband, when he leads them in the big north-south Currie Cup derby against the Blue Bulls at Newlands on Saturday.
Duane Vermeulen was named captain for the season, but knee surgery has meant he has not featured for WP so far this season.
Hooker Deon Fourie was then handed the captaincy armband for the first two rounds, against Griquas and the Leopards.
However, Liebenberg will start in the No.2 jersey this week - the only change to the team that beat the Leopards last week - and takes over the team leadership.
“The two hookers will be the interim captains until Duane [Vermeulen] returns from injury," coach Allister Coetzee told a media scrum.
"Deon [Fourie] took his chance when Tiaan [Liebenberg] was injured early in the Super Rugby season, and he really played well. He has a great allround game, whereas Tiaan is a first phase specialist, something that will be needed against the Bulls."
Although the selection of Liebenberg is the only change to the starting XV, Isma-eel Dollie drops off the bench to make for the more abrasive Burton Klaasen getting a place on the bench.
Explaining his selections the coach described his selections as “rugby decisions for the game at hand".
“The Bulls are a physical side and you need to match that physicality," Coetzee said.
"It will be direct, in your face stuff this weekend and there is a high premium on physicality. As such we have included Nic Groom on the bench, and brought in Burton Klaasen to cover centre - both are abrasive players that can handle the pressure and deserve the opportunity.
"Unfortunately it means [Louis] Schreuder and Dollie [with Klaasen coming in, and with Dewaldt Duvenage cover No.10] are not included this week.
"It's about team and the best rugby decisions for this week.
"We have a number of young players capable of playing at this level and as I have said many will get opportunities this season as we look to build our depth for Super Rugby 2012."
