Hoskins slams 'lilly-white' teams

South African Rugby Union boss Oregan Hoskins is unhappy with the make-up of certain 'lilly-white' provincial teams in South Africa.

According to a report in Afrikaans Sunday newspaper, Rapport, Hoskins said that certain unions were not doing their bit when it came to transformation.

The SARU President reportedly wrote a letter to those unions - some three weeks ago - the Sharks having fielded an all-white team (against the Blue Bulls) and the Cheetahs having fielded just one non-white player against the Leopards during Round One of the 2011 Currie Cup.

Hoskins told Rapport: "Only 17% of all players that played in the respective provincial competitions during that weekend were players of colour. It is too few, and we must improve it."

The SARU President continued: "It's unacceptable that certain unions still pick lily-white teams. SARU is committed to transformation, but not all unions are playing their part."

Hoskins's comments come after acting Western Province President Thelo Wakefield criticised his own union for not fielding enough non-white players after their 35-7 win over the Bulls last weekend - despite WP having five players of colour in their matchday 22.

Wakefield, however, claimed he was misquoted.

"This is definitely not the case. I support the WP teams whole-heartedly," Wakefield told clubnewlands.co.za, "I only related to what transpired at the General Council Meeting last week."

Whilst Hoskins was unhappy with certain unions in South Africa, the SARU boss was satisfied with the make-up of the current Springbok squad - in the Tri-Nations - which contains six players of colour, according to Rapport.

Bok coach Peter de Villiers had to explain himself in parliament on Tuesday of last week about the composition of the South African national squad and, of course, their recent defeats Down Under.
