An official investigation has been launched into alleged racial attacks at a club rugby match in Edenvale last week, the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) said on Thursday.

The union outlined the investigation process in a statement after receiving reports from referees, players and coaches involved in the incident.

"The union hereby wishes to confirm that it has a clear process that is followed in such matters and that this incident is currently being thoroughly investigated," the GLRU said.

"The process will encompass, amongst others, the receipt and perusal by Advocate Max Bare which will then, in turn, be submitted to the union's disciplinary committee as well as a committee for racism and development which will run a parallel process at the same time."

Half a dozen Soweto Rugby Club players were reported to have been injured in an attack, allegedly by Panthers players and spectators, towards the end of their President's League game at the weekend.

Both clubs said they had been racially abused by players on the opposing sides.

A charge of assault was being investigated at the Edenvale police station.
