Super trophy tour for Reds

Super Rugby champions the Reds are taking their prized silverware on a tour of Queensland with players, coaches and staff set to visit 22 cities and towns over the next three months.

Over 100,000 Queenslanders are expected to lock eyes on the trophy but captain James Horwill believes only half of those will be able to raise the 18-kilogram cup above their head, akin to his celebrations following the Reds historic victory over the Crusaders in the 2011 Super Rugby Final in July.

"The Super Rugby Trophy Tour is a great chance for us to share our victory with the whole of Queensland," Horwill said.

"It's on the road from August to late November, going to places like Cairns, Mackay and Port Douglas, and visiting schools and Rugby Clubs.

"Plus it will also be on show at key Rugby matches and tournaments across the state, hopefully it will bring a bit of luck to the home side.

"I'm sure the trophy with be a big hit at the Junior State Championships, the kids will be lining up to see who's strong enough to lift it!"

The opening leg of the Super Rugby Trophy Tour kicks off in Roma on Sunday 14 August, the first stop in an 800km trip which also takes in St George, Goondiwindi, Warwick, Toowoomba and Brisbane over eight days.

Once in Brisbane the Super Rugby Trophy will take pride of place at the Reds Gala Ball on Saturday 20 July at the Brisbane Convention Centre, before moving to the Reds spiritual home of Ballymore, where the Wallabies fan day will be staged on Sunday 21 August.

While a seven-year Australian Super Rugby title drought came to an end when the Reds toppled seven-time champions the Crusaders last month - another continues after the Bledisloe Cup was retained again by the All Blacks for the ninth year running.

However, the elusive Bledisloe Cup will join the Super Rugby Trophy Roadshow for 10 days from the 14-24 of August.

Prior to the official tour, head coach Ewen McKenzie and assistant coach Matt Taylor this week visited Rockhampton, Charters Towers and Townsville with the trophy.
