The Lions kept their unbeaten record alive against the Cheetahs, while the Sharks took a bite out of Western Province in the wet and feature in our Currie Cup Team of the Week.
Still the Lions rumble on and add another notch to their belt having seen off a stern Cheetahs challenge and win themselves five places in our starting XV and another three bubbling under selection.
The Sharks are the other predator on the move in the competition and won their fierce battle with WP, which earns them four spots in the team, with the Blue Bulls (two), Griquas (two), Western Province (one) and the Cheetahs (one) making up the numbers.
The fighting spirit of the Cheetahs was evident in their clash with the Lions and their efforts don't go unrewarded, with a staggering six players selected for the Bubbling Under side, while the Blue Bulls (two), Western Province (two), the Sharks (one) and the pumas (one) are also in the mix.
Three players hold onto their places from last week's team, as captain courageous Josh Strauss, raging bull Chiliboy Ralepelle, and big man Coenie Oosthuizen are all back again.
Here is our Currie Cup Team of the Week for Round Five:
15 - Jaco Taute (Lions): The exciting youngster was always involved in the game and his skill and vision to spot a gap helped him edge out Louis Ludik and Jurgen Visser.
Bubbling under: Louis Ludik (Sharks)
14 - Riaan Viljoen (Griquas): Scored a fantastic solo try down the touchline brushing off defenders and was his usual self with booming kicks down-field to pin the Leopards back.
Bubbling under: Deon van Rensburg (Lions)
13 - Lionel Mapoe (Lions): Was a creative force in the midfield and was able to beat the first tackler throughout the match.
Bubbling under: JW Jonker (Pumas)
12 - Pat Lambie (Sharks): He can run, kick and tackle while maintaining his composure on the field and made two try saving tackles in the match. This kid is pure class.
Bubbling under: Corné Uys (Cheetahs)
11 - Michael Killian (Lions): Finished off a marvellous team try and was always asking questions of the defence will ball in hand to add an attacking spark out wide, while Bjorn Basson also deserves an honourable mention for his efforts.
Bubbling under: Bjorn Basson (Blue Bulls)
10 - Freddie Michalak (Sharks): Why France coach Marc Lievremont is ignoring his is anyone's guess. The French magician was outstanding in wet conditions and controlled the game. Although young Elton Jantjies and Demetri Catrakilis were excellent.
Bubbling under: Elton Jantjies (Lions)
9 - Dewaldt Duvenage (Western Province): Possibly his best match this year, as the Province No.9 wasn't afraid to vary his game and kicked and ran at the right times to keep his side in with a shout right up until the end.
Bubbling under: Jano Vermaak (Blue Bulls)
8 - Joshua Strauss (Lions): Every week the beard gets longer and he gets better. Strong, brave and a true character willing to do the dirty work on the ground.
Bubbling under: Ashley Johnson (Cheetahs)
7 - Dewald Potgieter (Blue Bulls): The hard-working flank never disappoints when it comes to his commitment at the breakdown and cut a typically bruised and bleeding figure after the match having fought for every inch.
Bubbling under: Siya Kolisi (Western Province)
6 - Keegan Daniel (Sharks): A tight contest for openside with several candidates, but the Sharks skipper always makes up for what he lacks in size for what he offers in heart.
Bubbling under: Johan Wessels (Cheetahs)
5 - Ross Skeate (Sharks): Finally lived up to his billing as a quality lock and was dominant in the line-outs in tricky conditions and added value in open play.
Bubbling under: Franco van der Merwe (Lions)
4 - Wikus van Heerden (Lions): Heart and soul of the Lions for so many years and while he maybe a lock these days, he still possesses the slick skills of a flank at the breakdown.
Bubbling under: Francois Uys (Cheetahs)
3 - Lourens Adriaanse (Griquas): A hard grafter up front and he pounded his way forward at scrum time and had the Leopards pack in some trouble.
Bubbling under: WP Nel (Cheetahs)
2 - Chiliboy Ralepelle (Blue Bulls): A star at age group level and now the real Chiliboy has stood up and put all his injuries behind him to play some brilliant rugby and remind all his critics just how good he really is.
Bubbling under: Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs)
1 - Coenie Oosthuizen (Cheetahs): A beast of a loosehead prop and a delightful rugby player and terrifying ball carrier, who is very mobile for a front row forward. A mention must also go to 19-year-old Steven Kitshoff who looks to have a big future ahead of him.
Bubbling under: Steven Kitshoff (Western Province)
