Noord-Kaap played host to their townsfolk from Diamantveld in an FNB Classic Clash on Saturday and then beat them 44-7, their biggest victory ever over their Griqua rivals.

Before the match Henk Brand's men were nervous and took a lot of emotion into the game. Early it seemed that they had every right to be nervous when they lost fullback Henco Olivier who broke his eye-socket in four places. He was replaced by Vuyani Maqina.

Then Diamantveld scored a strange try. They kicked an up-and-under which hit the Noord-Kaap crossbar and bounced back into the field of play. Landing the ball then went into in-goal where wing Ronaldo fell on the ball for the try, Diamantveld's only try of the match.

The rest of the half, and indeed of the match, belonged to the home side who led 22-7 at the break.

The chief points' scorer was flyhalf Kobus du Plessis who scored a try, two penalties and four conversions for 19 points.

Coach Henk Brand was unwilling to single out any individual saying: "The full team were awesome and played their hearts out."
