Preview: Hudson Park vs Cambridge

Published: Wednesday, 17. August, 2011 in category Southern Hemisphere

In East London on Saturday there is an FNB Classic Clash between Hudson Park and Cambridge, and it is certain to be keenly contested.

At first glance keen Hudson Park, who have the only twin Springboks, the Ndunganes, amongst their Old Boys, are the favourites to win but Cambridge's performance last week up in Queenstown against Queen's suggests that they will not be push-overs.

But then in April Hudson Park gave Cambridge a 52-7 hiding. That was then. Then Hudson Park beat Port Rex 51-0 but more recently drew with them 12-all.

Results against common opponents suggest that Hudson Park are the stronger.

Stirling: Hudson Park won 21-12 and 31-0; Cambridge lost 22-20
Selborne: Hudson Park lost 21-12; Cambridge lost 66-3
Queen's: Hudson Park lost 52-5, Cambridge lost 25-20

Hudson Park spread their wings more, playing down in the Western Cape, and also against strong sides like Dale and Die Brandwag. Their best result was probably beating Kingswood.

Cambridge lost to Grens, St Andrew's (50-7), Gill and Union High and their best performance was probably last Saturday's defeat against Queen's.

Representative teams

Selborne, with 11 of the 22, Dale and Queen's again dominated the Border Craven Week side but Justin Haynes, the Hudson Park fullback made the side, the only player from the two schools to do so. But several from Hudson Park made the Border Academy team - Bryce Kennie, Bakkies Blundell, Jarryd Goddard, Wandile Mbambeni, Ayabulela Dlepu, Zolani Gamba, Zanovuyo Mqumbisa and Naythan Knoetzee. Aya Dlepu has been part of the SA Sevens squad.

Cambridge's captain Simphiwe Myira was in last years's Academy side and Jayson Reinecke was in this year's Grant Khomo's side. Still Under-16, Reinecke is playing his second year in the 1st XV long with Dyobiso, Nel, Benito, Davoren, Xintolo, Rungqu, Charlie, Mgweba and Fleming. Myira is in his third year in the 1st XV. Most of the first team played in 2010 when Hudson Park won 27-19.

Apart from their rugby achievers, Hudson Park have three who have played cricket for Border - Tomo Mqumbisa, Wandile Mbambeni and Justin Haynes, and Bantu Dingaan, whose time for the 100m is 10.71, has run for Border.

The signs are that Hudson Park have the better side - better results and more successful individuals, and yet.....
