Rogue Ras slams artless Ard

On a day when the South African Rugby Union was called to appear before Parliament's portfolio committee on sport over the anthem bungle earlier this week, the country's most infamous anthem butcher, Ras Dumisane, saw fit to criticize Ard Matthews.

It was revealed on Tuesday that SARU and its broadcast partner SuperSport will be brought before Parliament's portfolio committee on sport - after the musician, Matthews, bungled the national anthem during the Springbok team announcement.

The parliamentary committee said it did not find joy in an embarrassing event witnessed by the whole nation.

Matthews forgot some of the words to Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika and giggle foolishly, before mumbling an apology and then  continuing to sing - albeit not very well.

"This embarrassing incident occurred at a moment when we were celebrating the victory of the Springboks winning the game against New Zealand in Port Elizabeth on Saturday," the committee said.

The portfolio committee said SARU and SuperSport would appear at its next meeting to explain the "debacle" and avoid such "embarrassments" in the future.

Matthews, the lead singer of rock band Just Jinjer, and SuperSport apologised for the bungle on Wednesday.

However, this did not stop the most infamous anthem butchers of all, Dumisane, to take a swipe at Matthews.

Dumisane rose infamy in Toulouse in November 2009, when he incompetently stumbled through the national anthem ahead of the Boks' Test against France.

"He can't sing at all. In fact, I feel sorry for him," Dumisani told the Cape Argus, when asked about Matthews' mishap on Tuesday.

"He looks like he can't concentrate on singing and playing the guitar at the same time - he should have got someone to accompany him," said Dumisani.

Dumisane was asked to perform the anthem in France in 2009, but infuriated South Africans by singing off-key and evidently not knowing the words.

Pressed for a response to Dumisane's comments, Matthews reportedly replied: "I'm not here to talk about anyone else's performance… all I can say is I'm sorry."

Who was the worst?
