Key signings for the 'Canes

The Hurricanes have made two key signings, as coach Mark Hammett continues to finalise his squad for 2012.

Wellington forward Brad Shields will take part in his debut Super Rugby season having signed a two-year deal and Wellington Lions captain Jeremy Thrush has re-signed for 2012, with an option for 2013.

This brings the total number of contracted players up to 24 for next season.

Hammett was delighted to have captured the signature of versatile loose forward/lock Shields, despite the close attention of other Super Rugby franchise.

"Brad's form and professional attitude in his first NPC competition and with the New Zealand Under-20 team makes him an exciting prospect for next year," Hammett said.

"Whilst he is still young, he has shown that he can match any opponent physically and was rated as the forward of the tournament by the New Zealand U20 coaches."

The enthusiasm from the player is just as apparent, with Shields explaining: "It's hugely excited to be a part of something that I have dreamed of ever since I was a young fella and especially with the Hurricanes.

"I'm definitely looking forward to the opportunity I have been given, the challenge and the experience."

Contracting the squad for 2012 has been largely focussed on capitalising on the wealth of talent and development work within the Hurricanes region.

In securing the services of experienced lock forward Thrush, Hammett spoke extremely highly.

"Jeremy, who made his 50th appearance for the franchise this year, is a strong leader and an experienced member of our squad. He is committed team member and we are thrilled to have him on board in 2012."

On his re-signing, Thrush said: "I'm happy to be playing for the Hurricanes. There will be a young group of players and a strong will to succeed in 2012 and I am looking forward to the challenge."

Both of these signings are subject to medical clearance.
