The table-topping Lions produced another polished performance against the Sharks but the Griquas also caught the eye of the selectors and feature prominently in our Team of the Week.
The Lions deserve their spot on top of the Currie Cup standings after shutting out the Sharks in fine style in Johannesburg and they are rewarded with five players in our team for the third straight week.
The Griquas are always tough to play in Kimberley and they were seriously up for a scrap with their franchise partners on Saturday, their endeavour earns them five spots of their own in our team to equal the high-flying Lions.
The Blue Bulls and Western Province each travelled to play against the minnows of the competition and recorded solid victories despite being unable to secure bonus points. Each of them have two players in our team with two Blue Bulls forwards and two Province backs cracking the nod.
Here is our Currie Cup Team of the Week for Round Seven:
15 - Jaco Taute (Lions): The young fullback makes it into our team for the third consecutive week after another energetic performance. He has an amazing ability to make something out of nothing and showed once again that he can turn a pressure situation into an attacking opportunity for his team.
Bubbling under: Jurgen Visser (Blue Bulls)
14 - Riaan Viljoen (Griquas): This versatile outside back has a wide armoury of skills, and is desperately unlucky not to be in the Springbok frame. He is a graceful runner who also has a cannon of a boot, and showed his class when he outfoxed the Cheetahs defence just by looking at a gap without even having to throw the dummy.
Bubbling under: Akona Ndungane (Blue Bulls)
13 - Johann Sadie (Western Province): The prolific young midfielder had another big game and demonstrated just how dangerous he can be when given a bit of space by scoring one try and setting up another to beat off the strong challenges of Lionel Mapoe and Jean Stemmet for the outside centre berth.
Bubbling under: Jean Stemmet (Griquas)
12 - Barry Geel (Griquas): The hard-working inside centre showed that he is more than just a defender. He always makes his tackles, but he looked confident with ball in hand against the Cheetahs in another whole-hearted performance.
Bubbling under: Alwyn Hollenbach (Lions)
11 - JJ Engelbrecht (Western Province): The long-striding Province flyer showed his considerable finishing ability when he got over for a sensational try. We are sure to see more electric and elusive running from this rugged competitor in the future.
Bubbling under: Michael Killian (Lions)
10 - Elton Jantjies (Lions): A complete performance from this exciting young talent. He seemed to break the Sharks defensive line at will, showed an impressive ability to release his backline with some slick passing and his kicking was clinical once more.
Bubbling under: Demetri Catrakilis (Western Province)
9 - Michael Bondesio (Lions): The livewire scrumhalf seems to be growing in confidence since the departure of Jano Vermaak and is forging a promising combination with Jantjies, they certainly clicked against the Sharks and controlled the game well.
Bubbling under: Jano Vermaak (Blue Bulls)
8 - CJ Stander (Blue Bulls): This hungry young No.8 always puts his body on the line for his team and his enthusiasm and work-rate is just what the Blue Bulls were missing at the beginning of the season. Another encouraging performance which was capped with a try in which he showed good determination to cross the whitewash.
Bubbling under: Warren Whiteley (Lions)
7 - Davon Raubenheimer (Griquas): Provided some vital spark in the Griquas pack on Saturday and is really starting to deliver on the promise he has always shown. He seems to have developed the confidence to showcase his skills and delivered a big performance for his team.
Bubbling under: Derick Minnie (Lions)
6 - Johan Wessels (Cheetahs): Battled hard in a losing cause and impressed the selectors with his all-round skills. This fearless competitor plays the game at a high pace and intensity and fought hard right until the final whistle on Saturday.
Bubbling Under: Warwick Tecklenburg (Blue Bulls)
5 - Martin Muller (Griquas): The physical lock brings a hard edge to the Griquas pack and made life incredibly difficult for the Cheetahs on Saturday. He showed his value at set-piece time but also did more than his fair share of work around the park.
Bubbling under: Franco van der Merwe (Lions)
4 - Wikus van Heerden (Lions): Playing at lock these days rather than flank, but this hardened veteran is still a massive threat at the breakdown as the Sharks found out on Saturday. He plays with a lot of passion and certainly made his presence felt with another huge effort.
Bubbling under: Flip van der Merwe (Blue Bulls)
3 - Pat Cilliers (Lions): Although the scrums in Johannesburg on Saturday seemed to throw up more questions than answers and Sharks coach John Plumtree was left highly frustrated, both tightheads certainly made an impact on the game and Cilliers gets our nod ahead of Herbst after another industrious outing.
Bubbling under: Wiehahn Herbst (Sharks)
2 - Ryno Barnes (Griquas): The bustling Griquas hooker always gets over the advantage line and put in another hard-working performance up against a more highly-rated opponent in Adriaan Strauss. He brings stability to the Griquas front row and is not shy to carry the ball up and commit defenders.
Bubbling under: Bandise Maku (Lions)
1 - Dean Greyling (Blue Bulls): He brought his massive physical presence to bear on the Leopards front row who were under some serious pressure at times. A solid anchor who takes the ball into contact with gusto.
Bubbling under: JC Janse van Rensburg (Lions)
