Blues lock Kurtis Haiu was discharged without conviction for assault charges.

Haiu appeared for sentencing in the Pukekohe District Court on Tuesday after admitting assaulting property developer Glenn Cooper and using a hammer as a weapon.

On Monday the court heard about how he'd lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in a property deal and was waiting on news of his cancer when he punched  Cooper in the face according to APNZ.

A third charge of assaulting Cooper's partner, Kirsten St George, was earlier withdrawn by police.

Judge Winter said he was satisfied a conviction would stop him working overseas, and cause further financial stress to his wife and two children.
