Highlanders keep traditional jerseys

The Highlanders' board has decided it will retain the Highlanders' 2011 home colours for next year's Super Rugby season, and introduce their new green strip as the team's official away playing jersey.

In the meantime, the Highlanders will consult with their community on a new strip for the 2013 and 2014 Super Rugby seasons.

Highlanders CEO Roger Clark said that public feedback on the proposed green strip and the need for a neutral process for choosing a new colour had prompted this decision.

"We know that our fans and community are a huge part of what makes the Highlanders so special.

"Whatever the difference of opinion we had with some members of our community – what is blatantly clear is that we all want what's best for the franchise, and we want a successful, winning rugby team," he said.

"It's pretty hard to go anywhere without your fans, so we're staying blue, gold and maroon at home for next year, but we're definitely keen to freshen our look for the next two years.

"We are very fortunate to have great support from our sponsors and commercial partners who are right behind the Highlanders – whether in green or in blue. Apparel sponsor adidas have also been great supporters, enabling the 2012 home and away colours and encouraging us to consult with our community on the 2013 and 2014 jersey.

"The Highlanders feel there is a need to freshen the brand but what shape this will take will be influenced by the consultation process and outcomes. We've asked the University of Otago to conduct an independent consultation on the 2013 and 2014 strip.

"Now that we have certainty about our jersey for next year, we hope that all fans will get right behind the Highlanders for their 2012 campaign," he said.
