Ireland lose Healy for USA clash

Prop Cian Healy has been ruled out of Ireland's World Cup opener against the United States because he has not fully recovered from an eye injury he suffered in a warm-up against England last month.

Healy had been a doubt for the match in New Plymouth but while the Leinster loosehead misses out, Ireland team manager Paul McNaughton said he should be in action against Australia six days later.

"The medical advice was that Cian will be not be able to resume contact until this weekend," said McNaughton.

"But he will be fit and available for selection against Australia."

Ireland are now likely to either promote Tom Court from the bench or draft Tony Buckley straight into the starting XV.

Ireland have no other injury worries ahead of their opening match, with Sean O'Brien, Gordon D'Arcy and Rob Kearney all passed fit.
