New Zealand managed a 41-10 win over Tonga in the opening match of the World Cup, in Auckland on Friday. However, it was not entirely convincing.
In fact, All Black coach Graham Henry afterwards gave his team a five out of 10, barely a pass mark.
Some of the individual players were certainly better than that.
Jan de Koning rates the New Zealand players!
15 Israel Dagg:
There was awesome offload for Kahui's second try, to go along with a - couple of knock-ons. But he was better than most.
7/10
14 Richard Kahui:
Not bad finishing for a centre playing on the wing. Also a brilliant kick-'n-collect for Kaino's try. He put up his hand for a more regular starting spot, making over 100 metres on his numerous runs.
8/10
13 Ma'a Nonu:
He did the basics very well, but did not always look as comfortable one out in the midfield. There will be questions over his combination with SBW.
6/10
12 Sonny Bill Williams:
The usual off-loads and a few crash-ball runs, but he also butchered a certain try through selfish play. He had nine runs for less than 80 metres - that is hardly 10 metres per run. Maybe off-loading is all he has.
6/10
11 Isaia Toeava:
There was a nice break to help set up Dagg's second try, one of two very good line-breaks. He even popped up at first receiver at times.
7/10
10 Daniel Carter:
Steady rather than spectacular, but there were no mistakes - did what was required of him. He also did well to get up from that huge hit by Alisona Taumalolo.
6/10
9 Jimmy Cowan:
It was a nice tussle with Taniela Moa, but not entirely convincing . At times he made a hash of some quality possession. He made all of two metres the only time he went on a run.
5/10
8 Victor Vito:
He is obviously not Kieran Read, but did not let his team down. Did not have much time with ball in hand, but attended a few rucks.
6/10
7 Richie McCaw (captain):
Had a quiet game by his standards and attended just seven rucks, without any turnovers. However, there was really good carries to get over the advantage line.
6/10
6 Jerome Kaino:
He was powerful as always - both with ball in hand (making 72 metres) and on defence. He even managed a turnover, which is more than his captain did.
7/10
5 Ali Williams:
He was always in the thick of things, and raising the temperature ... sometimes illegally. Did his work in the set pieces and managed two turnovers.
6/10
4 Brad Thorn:
Was not his best game of the year. He managed a mere 13 metres with ball in hand an attended just four rucks.
5/10
3 Owen Franks:
He was solid on defence, close in - especially when Tonga surged in the second half. However, he struggled in the scrums in the second half.
5/10
2 Andrew Hore:
His line-out throwing was better than usual - although he still missed a couple. He managed two turnovers, which is his true value - outside the set pieces.
6/10
1 Tony Woodcock:
He was taken off early in the second half, after an average day at the office.
4/10
Replacements:
16 Corey Flynn (on for Andrew Hore, 73rd min):
Not enough time to be rated.
17 Ben Franks (on for Tony Woodcock, 45th min):
Penalised at his first scrum after coming on. Was under pressure throughout and conceded another couple of scrum penalties.
4/10
18 Anthony Boric (on for Victor Vito, 75th min):
Not enough time to be rated.
19 Sam Whitelock (on for Brad Thorn, 56th min):
He was solid on defence, but came on when Tonga launched their second-half surge and was reduced to mainly a defensive role.
5/10
20 Piri Weepu (on for Jimmy Cowan, 53rd min):
Not much better than Cowan - one run for seven metres.
5/10
21 Colin Slade (on for Dan Carter, 73rd min):
Not enough time to be rated.
22 Cory Jane (on for Isaia Toeava, 62nd min):
Also came on when Tonga were in ascendancy and had just one half-chance with ball in hand.
