Player ratings: Arise sir Youngs

England managed to sneak a fortuitous 13-9 win over Argentina in Dunedin on Saturday. But, as they say in the classics, you take any win ... even the ugly ones.

They have one player, and one player only, to thank for this - replacement scrumhalf Ben Youngs.

In games this close, a brutal arm-wrestle, all it takes is one moment of magic and Youngs provided just that. Maybe he will be knighted.

Jan de Koning rates the England players!

15 Ben Foden:
He was handed plenty of opportunities to counter-attack from deep, and had a few decent runs. But did not provide the spark expected.
6/10

14 Chris Ashton:
He probably did not have as many opportunities in open space as he would have liked - it was not that kind of game. However, even with the chances he had he had no major breaks.
5/10

13 Manu Tuilagi:
After all the hype you expected more from him. He is certainly strong, but looked limited and well dealt with by Puma defence.
5/10

12 Mike Tindall (captain):
England like their backline players big and bulky - it suits the restrictive gameplan they employ. He certainly fits that role, but doesn't really set the stage alight.
5/10

11 Delon Armitage:
You could see why he wasn't a first-choice player and only made the team after an injury setback. There was a great take fin the air at a crucial stage late in  the game, but he remains very limited.
6/10

10 Jonny Wilkinson:
Missed five very goalable kicks, including a horrible miss inside the final quarter - not near his usual standards at just two from seven.
4/10

9 Richard Wigglesworth:
You have to wonder why he is still starting. He was a major problem for England.
4/10

8 Nick Easter:
He tends to concede too many penalties at the tackle, but you can't fault his effort.
6/10

7 James Haskell:
He was up against a very impressive Argentinian loose trio, but held his own in the face of a very fierce onslaught.
7/10

6 Tom Croft:
In the first hour of the game he looked almost anonymous, but came into his own in that final quarter - when it mattered most. It was in defence where he was most valuable.
7/10

5 Courtney Lawes:
He was just a thug - late hits and knees on opponents, including knocking Mario Ledesma out by jumping in knees first after a tackle. If he doesn't get cited and banned it will be a disgrace. Anything else he did was irrelevant.
0/10

4 Louis Deacon:
He did the basics well enough, but never managed to stamp his authority on the opposition.
6/10

3 Dan Cole:
He produced some very strong scrumming late in the game - came good when it mattered most. Plenty of good carries and some impressive work at the breakdown.
7/10

2 Steve Thompson:
He was at his best in carrying the ball up in close quarters and working hard at the breakdown.
7/10

1 Andrew Sheridan:
He was penalised at scrum time and did not live up to all the pre-match hype. It was not a surprise when her was replaced.
5/10

Replacements:

16 Dylan Hartley (on for Steve Thompson, 62nd min):
He made a big impact in the close exchanges against a very powerful Pumas pack and played a big role in helping England gain the ascendancy.
7/10

17 Matt Stevens (on for Andrew Sheridan, 62nd min):
The England scrum looked much better with him on and maybe he should start. He brought the energy and power that Sheridan lacked.
7/10

18 Tom Palmer (on for Louis Deacon, 66th min):
He added some additional muscle at a timer when the Puma forwards started to tire.
6/10

19 Tom Wood:
Not used.

20 Ben Youngs (on for Richard Wigglesworth, 49th min):
He injected some energy into the England game and even though he was indecisive at times, he scored a crucial try with 12 minutes to go to put England ahead for the first time. It was the match-winner, the spark England lacked.
9/10

21 Toby Flood:
Not used.

22 Matt Banahan:
Not used.
