The Blitsbokke won the IRB Sevens Series in Las Vegas at a canter. They beat New Zealand 40-21, a score which flattered New Zealand.
Both teams had won in extra time to get into the Final, South Africa beating Samoa and New Zealand beating Fiji.
To beat New Zealand thus is astonishing enough but after the poor performance of a week before in Wellington it was incomprehensible. In Wellington the Blitsbokke had won just one out of five matches. In the Mojave Desert they won six out of six.
It was the second time in three years that they have won on the green oasis of the Sam Boyd Stadium, and their coach Paul Treu was delighted.
Treu said afterwards through tears of joy: "We haven't had this feeling for a while now. It's a while since we last won a Cup. So this is well deserved.
"We put all the hard work in back in Stellenbosch, and every win gives you more confidence and hopefully we can build on this to use as a platform for the rest of the season.
"The team must enjoy every moment of this win.."
Long-serving Frankie Horne, who captained the side in the injured Kyle Brown's absence, said: "I am pretty stoked. The guys showed a lot of heart and it means a lot for us. We had a lot of injuries, but the guys that came in they stepped up to the plate. They brought their bit to the party, and it was a great party at the end of the day."
Paul Delport, in his 10th year on the circuit said: "There are no words, it was just tremendous fight from the boys.
"We said what happened last week, we would never forget that feeling because we set such high standards for ourselves, but we knew we had to come out and perform and we did."
Branco du Preez, back from injury, provided much inspiration and the lion's share of the points. He scored 18 points in all.
South Africa's win means that five different teams have won the five tournaments on the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series. South Africa are now second to New Zealand on the series table.
