Keeping possession is vital if your team wants to dictate matters on the pitch and that can be difficult if players isolate themselves. Effective support play is crucial in retaining possession and putting the opposition defence under pressure.

Whether this means securing ruck ball or popping the ball up to a support runner once tackled support play is one of the vital ingredients which makes an effective team as opposed to a collection of individuals.

This means that each player should understand his role for each movement on the field and this is where effective coaching can make a big difference, as teams who know what is expected of them are bale to play with more confidence.
