How to Spiral Kick

Published: Monday, 20. June, 2011 in category How To

The spiral kick is the best method for kicking the rugby ball when what you want is maximum distance on your kicks. The spiralling of the ball makes the rugby ball travel as aerodynamically as possible. The spiral kick slices through the air unlike the on end kick which wobbles end over end through the air. Though the on end kick has become increasingly popular in rugby because of its greater accuracy, the spiral kick is still the best option to achieve maximum distance. As such, it would behoove any kicker to be proficient in this style of kick. (Go here for a more in depth look at the pros and cons of the spiral and on-end kick).

Points to remember:

  1. Sight Your Target- Don't just hit and hope! Make sure you have sighted the area you want to kick to so you can orient your body properly and then focus on your kicking mechanics.
  2. Ball at 30 degree angle- Hold the ball at roughly a 30 degree angle in your hand with the bottom end facing in towards you.
  3. Keep Your Eye on the Ball- Make sure to keep your eye on the ball the entire time through the kick after you have sighted your target.
  4. Kick Straight Through the Ball- There is no need to try to spin the ball off of your foot assuming you have the ball at an angle. Trying to spin the ball off the foot will only make the ball slice to one side and decrease the force you can apply to the ball. Make sure to kick straight through the ball for maximum power and to assure the ball travels as straight as possible.
