The 23-year-old was sent off just 17 minutes into Wales' agonising 9-8 defeat for a tip tackle on Les Bleus' wing Vincent Clerc.
The incident overshadowed a series of stellar performances from the Cardiff Blues' openside, who has since admitted that referee Alain Rolland, who came in for fierce criticism in some quarters, was correct to show him the red card.
Warburton is understandably keen to put the incident behind him and get on with what promises to be a lengthy international career, but he admits he has been stunned by the messages of support he has received, which have included being consoled by strangers while doing his shopping.
"Wherever I go there are always references to the red card, people saying 'unlucky' and stuff like that so I can't get it out of my mind, but when I am at the training ground either with the Blues or Wales no-one talks about it so it helps me forget about it.
"I have had a few hugs off strangers. I have had great support and knowing everyone in Wales is behind me, with the post I have received and emails and all sorts of communication with people saying 'keep your head up' has been fantastic.
"But I see the red card as a motivation to play well. I drew a line under it as soon as it happened and I have moved on and I am focusing on playing well for the Blues and Wales."
But Warburton admits that in his two appearances for his region since returning from the three-week ban he received in the wake of his sending off, he has paid particular attention to try and avoid a repeat of his tackle on Clerc.
"I have had a couple of tackles where I have held on and it does go through my mind that I make sure I have my arms firmly round the other player and bring him back to ground properly," he said.
Warburton was only handed the armband for the global showpiece in New Zealand after incumbent Matthew Rees was ruled out of the tournament with a neck injury, but head coach Warren Gatland has had little hesitation in keeping faith with the back-rower ahead of next weekend's meeting with Australia at the Millennium Stadium.
Warburton is glad to have held on to the honour having relished the leadership role at the World Cup.
"I wasn't sure (if I would keep the captaincy)," he said.
"The coaches didn't give anything away so I am pleased I have kept it for however long, but I am sure Matthew will do everything he can to get it back.
"There are a few guys in the squad who can do the job, as Warren says to be captain you have to be guaranteed your place, so for me it is about performing week in week out."
While Warburton is still in the early stages if his Test career, the re-match with the Wallabies, who beat Wales 21-18 in the third-place play-off at the World Cup, will mark the international swansong of record try scorer Shane Williams.
The Ospreys winger has racked up a remarkable 57 tries in 86 appearances for his country and will go down as one of the greatest players to have donned the red jersey.
And Warburton is desperate for one of the legends of the Welsh game to be given a winning finale.
"It will be one of the main motivations for us. The service he has given Wales over the last 10 years has been incredible, and he is one of the greatest Welsh players.
"We want him to go on a high and give him a good send-off," he said.
