The Hong Kong Sevens is the premier stop on the IRB Sevens World Series tour. The tournaments elite status is due to the high quality teams as well as the fact it was the original, first being played in 1976. And the World Rugby Shop.com has a great selection of the rugby jerseys that will be worn at this year’s tournament.
The tournament was way ahead of its time. The original idea was to bring 15’s team but this was determined to not be feasible with the short three-day timetable to host the event. So the change was made to 7’s not the trendy Olympic-bound sport it is today.
The organizers went where no one in rugby union had been before and found a sponsor in Cathay Pacific airline.
And so the foundation for the Sevens tour was set and 2013 looks to be a great year. The tournament will be played from March 22- 24.
New Zealand is on top of the points table but there has been a different winner at each stop thus far on the tour. The tour winners thus far have been: Gold Coast – Fiji; Dubai – Samoa; South Africa – New Zealand; Wellington – England; and U.S. – South Africa.
Who do you think will win the Hong Kong Sevens?
