NFL Linebacker Makes Rugby Debut
2008-02-07 22:33:56

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Dhani Jones made his rugby debut with Blackheath Rugby Club in the rugby union clubs 61-15 loss to Launceston in the EDF Cup last weekend.  The outing, however, was not an trial or first step in changing professions but merely a chance for the U.S. football player to experience one of the top sports in the U.K.

Jones is working as a commentator on a U.S. travel series made by Red Line Films and jumped at the chance to try rugby.   After inquiring as to the possibility with head coach Harvey Biljon, Jones was giving the OK.

“Our players thought it would be fantastic to have a full-time athlete from a top American sport testing himself among our amateurs,” Biljon was quoted as saying on Telegraph.co.uk. “Because Dhani is a defensive lineman, his catching and passing are the things we need to work on.

“All being well, he will come on the field as a flanker. I don’t think it will make much difference whether it’s blindside or openside. We just have to make sure that when he hits someone it is an opponent who has got the ball and that he’s not running an illegal blocking move.”

Jones got some expert advice in preparing for the match.  He attended Leicester's Premiership match against Newcastle with former England international Martin Johnson  and Austin Healey who tried to explain the finer points of the game.

Biljon was good on his word and with 10 minutes left in the weekend match, Jones made his appearance and according to the team’s website ‘made one outstanding tackle in midfield’ while on the pitch.

"It is all good fun and there is no disrespect to the cup," Biljon, a former Wasps and Natal scrum-half, said. "Launceston are pretty much semi-professional and I think they will fancy fronting up against Dhani. That's the natural competitive spirit, which is what the cup is all about."
