Wilkinson: 'Ability to adapt key'
2010-02-08 14:45:01

Flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson admits that England were 'far from perfect' in their 30-17 victory over Wales on Saturday but insists that the manner in which Martin Johnson's side were able to get the job done is a massive step forward for the side.

Johnson’s England have come under regular scrutiny from pundits and experts in the UK, with most reports pretty damning, but now, following their win at Twickenham, have started to turn some of their doubters around.

Wilkinson, as always, was crucial to England victory. Reflecting on the match however the Toulon star says the most important aspect of the match was England's ability to finish off the job.

"Wales fought back well, but the biggest change we've made is to be able to deal with that shift in momentum," explained the 2003 World Cup winner following the match to the RFU.

“They're a quality side, but we remained steadfast. That's what we need to build on - we've had some good games in the past, but failed to capitalise. Even though today [Saturday] was far from perfect, there's much to be happy about.

"We defended hard and well on several occasions. Wales will make life tough for everyone else in the Six Nations, so we're pleased to have them out of the way. There's still tons we can improve on as a team though - from my point of view that includes decision-making and game management."
