Promising young openside flank Liam Gill has signed a new contract with the Queensland Reds that will keep him in Brisbane with the current Super Rugby champions until the end of 2013.
The 19-year-old loose forward impressed in his debut season with the Brisbane-based franchise this year, making his first appearance from the bench in the third round against the Brumbies before later earning his first run-on cap when he was chosen to go head-to-head with Australia’s first-choice No.7 David Pocock and the Western Force in Round 17.
Despite his lack of experience Gill looked at home at Super Rugby level immediately and has been tipped as a future Wallabies star after a dream debut season that saw him win both the Super Rugby title and later the Queensland Premier Rugby competition with his club Sunnybank.
"2011 has been a dream year for me and I'm really excited about next season and the challenges that lie ahead. I've got big aspirations for the future and I believe being at the Queensland Reds is the best place to achieve my goals," Gill said.
Reds Head coach Ewen McKenzie said he was very pleased with the progress Gill made in his debut season, and added that he is excited about watching him continue to develop his game at Suncorp Stadium.
"There's no denying Liam is one of the most highly touted young talents in rugby at the moment and we're confident the environment at the Reds is the best place for him to continue to maximise his playing potential," McKenzie said.
"He has a big future ahead of him and to see him already offer so much on the playing field at such a young age is exciting for the team and our fans."
The tearaway flank has already achieved quite a lot in his fledgling career since he signed for the Reds when he was just 17 years old. He produced a stand-out performance against the Chiefs in the last game before the play-offs for which he earned the man of the match award and then made cameo appearances in both the semifinal and Final in Brisbane.
He carried that form into the Premier Rugby competition and secured the Colt of the Year award for the second year running to cap an outstanding 2011.
A former captain of the Australian Schoolboys side, he represented the Australian Sevens side in 2010 and was named in the national Under-20 team as well before he and teammate Dom Shipperley were released as injury cover for the Reds at the business-end of the Super Rugby season.
