Wentzel calls for consistency

Ahead of Friday's trip to Sixways, Wasps' lock Marco Wentzel says his side must strive for consistency if they are to pick up their fourth win of the Premiership this season.

London Wasps face Worcester in a Round Seven match at Sixways on Friday.

"We have got some really exciting players in the backs with the likes of Tom Varndell and Christian Wade who are scoring a lot of tries," the two-times capped Springbok said.

"We score some amazing tries and run some amazing moves but then suddenly we fall asleep for five minutes and people score against us so it is just about us being awake and in the game for the full 80 minutes. The need for that consistency is something that the coaches have been hammering home to us so as players we are responsible for sorting it out.

"Worcester is a tough place to go and they have been doing well this season so it's going to be a real challenge."

Wentzel could be reunited this weekend with Steve Thompson, his teammate at Leeds last year, after the England hooker linked up with his new team last week. He is vying for the No.2 shirt after his return from the World Cup and Wentzel says he is a fantastic addition.

"I'm really happy to be reunited with Steve who is also at the moment my new housemate! He cleans up after me, buys food and does everything around the house! Seriously though, it is good news for us that he has joined the squad and we've been working hard with him this past week so hopefully he will have a part to play this weekend."

Wentzel, who leads the Wasps line-out, says Thompson's arrival will also be a boost to the set-piece.

"Our line-out has been going well and Steve and I have a good understanding but it is always going to be something you need to work on.

"We've got a couple of other really good hookers here too to benefit us in that area. The Premiership is not easy when it comes to the set piece and if there is a slippy ball on Friday it is going to be tough.

"However the last few weeks the scrum has been much improved. Against Bath it was pretty good but we need to get that consistency into the scrum as we have been having in the lineout."

Wentzel is very positive about the direction this Wasps team is heading.

"I think some people think of Wasps and think that as a team we have won all these trophies and honours and we should be winning every game, but the current group is not that team.

"We are a young team with at least 16 new guys, a new director of rugby and new coaches. We are actually doing well for a brand new team, but we are still learning and hopefully we will get better and better as we go along."
