Henson has his work cut out

Big Welsh inside centre Jamie Roberts has warned new Cardiff Blues recruit Gavin Henson that he will have to find some good form if he wants to nail down a starting spot this season.

Henson has been something of a special case in recent times, interspersing short spells with English Premiership side Saracens and French glamour club Toulon with appearances on various reality television shows, but he will need to be focused on rugby if he wants to get a game in Cardiff.

The 29-year-old former Ospreys star has been accused of caring more about his image than his form on the pitch, and despite his versatility he still faces an uphill battle to break into the Blues' team.

Roberts played a starring role for Wales in their World Cup campaign which saw them fall one point short of qualifying for the final, with his bullocking runs in midfield drawing high praise from various pundits.

Henson partnered Roberts in the Welsh midfield against England in August, but was ruled out of World Cup contention after breaking his arm and although he has the ability to play both inside and outside centre as well as flyhalf he has a lot to prove if he wants to unseat the players who are established in their positions at the club.

In the midfield Roberts and Casey Laulala have formed a very effective combination while Dan Parks and Ceri Sweeney will be his rivals if he wants to fulfill the playmakers role.

Roberts told Walesonline: "Gavin is going to have his work cut out to break into the team, but that competition is what we need. That is what drives people on and Gavin can provide that.

"Gavin adds to a lot of competition here at the Blues in the midfield along with myself, Casey, Daf Hewitt and Gavin Evans. You then have Dan Parks and Ceri Sweeney at flyhalf," he added.

No doubt Henson signed with the Blues with the intention of reigniting his career, but he faces a stern test if he wants to get back on track and enjoy regular game-time.
